Finding the open man
Menno freshman Jacob Hertz spots a teammate through the
defense pressure of the Freeman Flyers in Cornbelt action last week Thursday,
Jan. 23. The Wolves nearly upended their conference rival, holding a 17-9 lead
after one quarter and maintaining a 29-24 edge at the halftime break. But FHS
made a defensive adjustment in the second half that shut down senior guard Chet
Peterson, whose 16 points all came in the first two quarters, to rally for the
58-52 win. While Wolves trailed for the final 12 minutes of the game, they hung
around until the bitter end thanks to effective inside play against the taller
Flyers and good shooting; Menno finished 7-for-17 from three-point range and
trailed 53-52 with less than a minute to play. The Wolves bounced back from
their loss to Freeman with a route over Howard two nights later and took a 4-6
record into Tuesday’s game against Gayville-Volin. For more on recent action
