The joy of reading
Linda Daugaard, wife of Gov. Dennis Daugaard, reads to the third grade class at Menno Public School Wednesday morning, April 4. Daugaard visited the school as part of the reading initiatives she plans to focus on during her time as First Lady of South Dakota. Daugaard plans to visit third, fourth and fifth grade classrooms around the state to read to students. She also plans to use the visits to help recycle gently-used books by collecting them and dropping off donated books with each classroom. She is also promoting the Read Out And Read programs, which is administered by the state department of social services. The program provides age-appropriate books to infants through 5-year-old children during child well-checks.

Menno Relays postponed until May 7

The Menno Relays have been postponed from Thursday, April 12 to Monday, May 7 due forecasts of cold, windy and rainy weather.

Jacque Liebl, activities director for the Menno School District, said school officials and volunteers will attempt to use the same schedule and run both high school and junior high events on the rescheduled date.

Teams that plan to participate in the May 7 event include Menno, McCrossan Boys Ranch, Marion and Hanson. Parker and Mitchell Christian will participate with their high school teams only, Liebl said. More teams are being sought to attend the track and field meet.

The event will replace the Menno Junior High Relays, which were originally scheduled for May 7.

The event was rescheduled after the April 11 edition of the Hutchinson Herald had been sent to press. Watch the Herald print edition for further updates on the Menno Relays.
