Hopf to the rescue
Jim Hopf, a resident at the Menno-Olivet Care Center, recently came to the rescue of Wanda Pond, an employee at the facility, when he spotted a fire on her front porch and attempted to both warn her and put the fire out. Pond had come home from working a split shift and was sound asleep when Hopf spotted the fire as he drove by her house in his motorized wheelchair on Pearl Street. Hopf, who has Parkinson’s Disease, climbed out of his wheelchair and up onto the porch in his effort to help. Pond’s son-in-law spotted Hopf and rushed from his home across the street to extinguish the fire with a garden hose. For the complete story, see this week's print edition of the Hutchinson Herald.
